Weekend Classes
All weekend classes are held at our natural campsite in Pendleton County, West Virginia.
The natural camp is located in a beautiful and rustic setting, in a hollow between two
mountains. The property is over 50 acres with a native trout stream flowing through it.
The campsite is in the rugged mountain terrain of West Virginia with many boulders and
rock outcroppings. There is abundant wildlife around the area including deer, wild turkey,
bobcat, snakes, and the occasional bear.
In order to keep the area as pristine as possible, travel to the campsite is done as a
group by van or other authorized vehicle only. This is in order to lessen any
environmental impact of excess vehicles on the area.
Please be aware that due to the nature of the campsite it should be considered a
primitive facility.
This means that there are certain considerations that should be taken into account if you
are going to the camp for a weekend class.
These include but are not limited to:
No electricity.
No running water
Outdoor eating and cooking facilities
Primitive toilet facilities (sawdust bucket)
Primitive shower facilities (Bucket showers)
Tent or primitive structure camping.
No phone (limited cell phone reception due to mountains)
Subject to outdoor weather conditions. (Cooler in mountains)
No handicap accommodations.
In order to prevent the accidental spread of fire, smoking is allowed only in designated
areas and there are no open fires allowed at any tent camping sites. Additionally
alcoholic beverages are not permitted at any time.
We hope you will respect our wishes and join us in keeping the area as natural as
possible by helping to keep the environmental impact of our presence low while still
enjoying a weekend class at our camp.
Awareness Weekend (prerequisite: awareness & instructor approval)
Sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste, these are the five primary senses we all learned about
in school.
Working together they collect information that allows us to be completely aware of our
environment and everything that is going on around us. Yet in today’s mainly sight
orientated society we often under use our other four senses of hearing, smell, touch and
taste. It is not that these senses have been purposely turned off for they are always
functioning unless physically injured. Rather it is our loss in the ability to access and
interpret the data that they are constantly collecting and storing.
Spend the weekend participating in fun exercises designed to increase your awareness.
Redevelop your ability to reconnect with all your senses and learn to access the
information they are taking in. Learn more about your environment and begin to use all
your senses to the fullest in order to increase your awareness.
Awareness also plays a part in our spirituality. Come and discover how developing your
physical awareness skills will also help you to begin to explore the spiritual side of
awareness. Reconnect with the Spirit of the Earth and open the doorway to the realm of
the spirit.
This Awareness Weekend builds upon exercises learned in the Awareness class as well
as introducing several new ones. Additionally this weekend class will give you an
opportunity to slow down and escape the fast pace of everyday life. Slow down to the
natural speed of the earth/nature, which moves much slower than today’s fast paced
society. Reconnect to the natural rhythm of life that is all around you everyday while also
learning to connect with your inner self.
Emergency Wilderness Weekend (prerequisite: fire & shelter & instructor approval)
Thousands of people venture into the wilderness each year. Of these many are
experienced outdoors persons, some are semi-experienced outdoors persons, and
others are venturing into the outdoors for the first time. Almost all of these groups return
home safely with wonderful memories from their outdoor experience.
Yet some of these same people also become lost or experience other unexpected
emergency situations while in the outdoors. In the wilderness an unexpected emergency
situation can rapidly turn a minor problem into a major disaster. No one begins their
journey into the outdoors with the expectations that an emergency will happen; yet often
events beyond our control may force an emergency situation upon us.
Come and join us for a weekend of learning about what to do in the event you experience
an emergency situation on your wilderness travels. This class is designed for the
beginner as well as the experienced outdoors person. Learn some tips that could see you
through an unexpected emergency situation. Learn how to properly prepare and plan for
a trip in order to decrease the chances of something going wrong. Also learn about the
priorities of survival and how to determine your immediate needs in the event that an
emergency does happen.
Part of this class will consist of a review of the lessons learned in the Fire and Shelter
classes. Added to this will be a chance for the participants to work with fire under
wilderness conditions as well as the chance to spend time in a shelter of their own
making. Additional material to be covered will concern finding and purifying water, finding
food and signaling for help. Participants will also learn about the various survival kits
available today as well as how to make their own custom emergency survival kit.
This class is a foundation class, exploring only the bare minimum of wilderness survival-
using whatever material may be on hand to make a difficult situation more tolerable.
Additionally please feel free to bring any supplies/equipment that you would like to try out
before having to use them in an emergency situation. As a courtesy please inform us of
any items you might bring to try out as we may already have them available for
demonstration purposes.
This class is NOT intended as a substitute for a full Wilderness Survival Course.
Material not covered in this class will include Wilderness First aid and CPR. For these
classes please contact the Wilderness Safety Council and/or your local chapter of the
American Red Cross.
